Look at the services each one lists and the areas it covers, visit its own website, and ask for the price in writing — with what it includes — before you agree to any work.
Common signs are slipped or missing tiles or slates, damp patches on ceilings, sagging, and blocked or overflowing gutters. A roofer can inspect it and tell you what needs doing.
Repairs and like-for-like replacements usually do not, but changes to the shape or height of a roof, and work on a listed building or in a conservation area, may. Check with your council's planning department before work starts.
Agree in writing what will be done, the materials, whether scaffolding is included, how long it will take, and what guarantee is given on the work.
