Look at the services each one lists and the areas it covers, visit its own website, and ask for the price in writing — with what it includes — before you agree to any work.
Replacement windows and doors in England and Wales must meet the Building Regulations. An installer registered with a competent-person scheme, such as FENSA or Certass, can certify the work and give you a certificate — keep it, as a buyer's solicitor will ask for it.
uPVC is low-maintenance and widely used; aluminium frames are slimmer and often used for large glazed doors; timber suits older and listed buildings. Installers can explain what suits your property.
Often — misted double-glazed units, handles, hinges and seals can usually be replaced on their own. Some of the companies listed here repair as well as install.
