Look at the services each one lists and the areas it covers, visit its own website, and ask for the price in writing — with what it includes — before you agree to any work.
Contact a practice directly and ask whether it is taking on new NHS or private patients. You can find NHS dentists near you, and see which are taking on new patients, with the NHS website's Find a dentist service (www.nhs.uk/service-search/find-a-dentist).
In England, NHS dental treatment is charged in set bands; private treatment is priced by each practice and may include options the NHS does not offer. Ask the practice which it offers, and the cost, before treatment starts.
Call your own dentist first. If you cannot reach a dentist, or you are not registered with one, contact NHS 111 for advice — the NHS website's Find a dentist service (www.nhs.uk/service-search/find-a-dentist) also lists practices near you.
