In England and Wales, much electrical work in homes must meet the Building Regulations. An electrician registered with a competent-person scheme, such as NICEIC or NAPIT, can certify their own work; otherwise it has to be checked by your council's building control. Ask which scheme an electrician belongs to.
An Electrical Installation Condition Report is an inspection of a property's wiring, sockets and consumer unit that records anything unsafe. Landlords in England must have one under the Electrical Safety Standards in the Private Rented Sector (England) Regulations 2020.
Ask what the work includes, whether it will be certified, how long it will take, and for the price in writing.
